Beta Readers, WIPs, Print Books and Cover Pretties

Gods, it sounds like a lot to go over from the title of this post, but really there isn't that much to discuss.

Hide and Seek is with my beta readers now. Once they're done with it I'll hire an editor to go over it and polish it up for publication.

As for my current projects, I've got...two? Yeah, two going on, and one that needs to be outlined.

First, I've got Hour of the Wolf back from my MIL with lots of notes for me to go over. Hopefully, the fresh perspective will allow me to fix the problems and finish the novel.

Second, I've started a series for Entangled's Otherworld line called Terra Noctem. The first novel in the series is called Sound's Familiar. I've got the novel outlined and I've started working on it, but I still have some research to do before the novel gets into the full swing of things. I love creating new worlds and getting ideas on how it should (and shouldn't) work. (Plus I promised someone months ago that I'd start this series "soon", and I hate breaking a promise.)

Thirdly, I've started a rough outline of Hope in Darkness. I know a lot of you are waiting for this one, and I promise that it's coming. It's going to be darker than a lot of my other novels due to Hope's ongoing issues and Jamie's... erm... insanity. I need to maybe binge watch Dexter to wrap my brain around poor Jamie.

Man, that's a lot of stuff already.

Okay. Print books. I'm working on that. I need to figure out how to make ebook covers become print book covers, since all I got from Samhain were the ebook covers (it's all they had to give me, so it wasn't their fault). Once I figure out sizing, trim, etc. I'll start my print publications.

Lastly, I have a cover pretty to share with you! It's the cover for Speak Thy Name, the third Nephilim book! I've already shared it on Facebook, but I know not everyone follows me there so I thought I'd share it here as well.

This Nephilim book will be going to print as I'm self-publishing this series from now on. Paper & Sage did the cover art, and they did a beautiful job with it. I'll definitely use them again.

Anything else? Hmmm... Anything I might have been holding out on you guys?

The wonderful Angela Waters did this cover. It made sense to ask her, as she's done all of the True Destiny covers up till now. Another amazing cover artist I adore and will use again.

Samhain Closing

On February 28th, 2017, Samhain Publishing will close its doors forever.

So what does that mean for me (and you)? Well, if you have books you purchased from Samhain's website, go download them now while the site is still live. If you have books from Samhain through third-party vendors (like Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Kobo) you should be fine. The books won't be yanked from your device.

As for me, it means I get to enter the wonderful world of self-publishing.

Oh yes. I'll be self-pubbing the Halle Pumas, Heart's Desire, The Nephilim and the True Destiny series at a minimum. There's a lot of work ahead of me to get this going, but the author community is awesome and they're all willing to help someone who needs it, especially Carrie Ann Ryan and Piper J Drake. One gave me sites to investigate and the other let me vent my fears and frustrations. Others have offered their input as well.

I'm lucky to be in a field where we are willing to help each other succeed. I hope to pay it forward some day.

So Speak Thy Name will come out sooner than June, the date Samhain had given me. I have to hire an editor and a cover artist before I can upload the book to the different sites. I understand the Google bookstore is not accepting any new authors, so I may not be for sale there in the foreseeable future, but all the others should be doable. It also means that Hide and Seek will be up as soon as I finish the two sex scenes I still have to write, have it go through the Meat Grinder and the beta readers and have the rights back to the rest of the series.

I'm hoping the rights reversion doesn't take too long.The sooner I own the rights once more the better. I have to find out if I need to get new ISBN's for the books that are already in print or not. I have to arrange to purchase the covers for both print and eBook editions. I need to learn how to format for ebook and print editions as well. There's so much to do, so many lists of things I need to take care of, so much to research...I...adulting is...

Stick a fork in me. I think I'm well done.

A Note About The Long Goodbye

A few things to note before I get to the post: during Samhain's close, books will be for sale! So if there's a book you want, go ahead and buy it. Samhain will let everyone know when the books will no longer be available, and believe me, so will the authors. Also, the authors will continue to get paid, so don't worry that we're getting shafted. We're not. I would trumpet it if we were, believe me.

Now to the post:

All right. By this time everyone knows that Samhain Publishing will be closing its doors. And some of you are probably wondering why I haven't commented on it much.

Shock. Sheer, unadulterated shock. I didn't see it coming, and part of me is still reeling.

See, Samhain was my first publisher, the one who took a chance on me when everyone else said "no". So for that alone they had my loyalty.

Add in the wonderful editors I was always lucky to have, like Angela James and Tera Cuskaden, the awesome artwork on my books, and the fact that problems, if any, were explained and fixed without leaving us, the authors, in the dark for very long, and you had a wonderful publisher to work for.

So, yeah. I'm kind of in mourning for them. I can't even imagine what Christina Brashear, the owner, is going through. She put her heart and soul into her company, so to have it begin to die has to have her in mourning hell. I think all of us who worked for them will, to some extent or another, mourn the loss of Samhain.

But I have no doubt Chris Brashear will come through this. She's strong, that lady. (Don't tell her I said this, but she kind of scares me a little. But in a good, "Where's my book?", hovering over me sort of way.) And she's making sure Samhain goes out as classy as possible, by taking care of her authors and making sure we're in the loop as she, and her company, go through this rough time.

In the meantime, there's work to be done.

For me, it means that I have a little time to decide what I'm going to do next. And I do have some ideas. The first ones involved a lot of chocolate and some sobbing, but I'm over that now. Mostly. The rest of my plans involve possibly finding an agent (I've never had one before), subbing elsewhere and, if necessary, looking into self-publishing. I'm not going to stop writing any time soon, so don't be afraid that your favorite stories are going to abruptly stop. They won't. They'll just have new homes.

Needless to say, most of the Coming Soon stuff I posted isn't going to happen, not yet anyway. I'll be changing that by the end of the week, probably with more chocolate, sobbing and dog kisses to make me feel better (and steal my chocolate. Don't worry, I won't let her have any.)

However, I will continue my series for Carina Press over the next few months while I research my options and figure out where to go from here. That means I plan on finishing More Than Words and starting work on The Hour of the Wolf, the next Maggie's Grove book and the last of the inner dryad circle. (The one after that involves a bunny and a dragon. Heh.)

It also means that covers will change, damn it. I'm sorry about that, but I don't own the artwork that's on my covers. I only own the content of the book. Wherever the books wind up, I'll do my best to make sure they get the best artwork I can.

God damn it, Julian. I love you('re cover).

There's not much more to say, other than It's all about the story. And that story was wonderful while it lasted. Like all good stories there's an end, but hopefully a sequel will come down the pike. We all know how much I love a good sequel. So please remember: we, the authors, we're not down, and we're certainly not out.

We're just preparing for the sequel.

Just A Spoonful of Sugar...

Okay. For those of you who follow me on Facebook, you probably know most of this.  For those who don't, I'm sorry the blog has seemed to fall by the wayside. This year has been one hell of a roller coaster ride so far, and I don't see it ending any time soon.

For startes, Dusty and I closed on our new house in May, and we've finally sold the old one (knock on wood, because we close on the 30th). We've mostly gotten our acts together, if not our boxes completely unpacked. We know what we still need to purchase and what we don't, because our new house is larger than the old one. It's more handicap friendly, and allows Dusty and I to each have a workspace without having to take over the living or dining rooms. I love how my office is coming along; the curtains are hung, the TV is up, the fireplace works and there are spots for my furbabies.

I still need to paint and hang some pictures up, but the builders suggested we wait on that. In May they come back and fix any settlement cracks or nail pops.After that, I'll probably paint the walls a nice, neutral gray.Have I mentioned I HATE beige? Or Apartment White?

As far as my health goes, I've had my ups and downs, and a slew of new medicines. Some worked (Tramadol), and some did not (Amitriptyline). We're still messing with the cocktail I have to take on a daily basis as my symptoms get under control, only to show new ones. I'm also finding there's more wrong with me than we first thought, but it's all slowly coming out of the shadows and getting taken care of.

Unfortunately, changing meds means changing me, at least a little. The amitriptyline turned me into a serious zombie. Dusty would come into the bedroom, check if I was still breathing, and let me sleep. This went on for about two weeks before I put my foot down. The reaction to the medicine is rare, but I took myself off it with the doctor's permission, and now I'm only a third zombified.

I've also gotten the first round of edits for this one just yesterday, so I'll be working on those this weekend. I also know the above blurb will be changed slightly; my editor thinks, and I agree, that it would read better if we put Magnus first rather than Slade.

Now for the works in progress:

Work is going well on Raven and Amanda's book in the Gray Court, Never More. I realized during last week, when I wasn't feeling well and couldn't work much, that there were some issues that needed to be worked out before I could get to the next quarter of the book. I'm in the process of fixing those this week. This always happens at some point during the process, and I'd rather fix them as I catch them than keep going. It will just nag at me and nag at me and I'll wind up with writer's constipation until I fix it.

Let that image percolate in your brains for a while. Heh.

Finally, I already have a contract for the fourth Maggie's Grove Book, Song of Midnight Embers. It will be all about Greer and Mollie; I already have a rough outline of what needs to happen, but I need to do a more fleshy one before I start work on it. I need to turn it in by the end of December,so I'll need to get Raven's story done quickly. Luckily, he and Amanda are cooperating for the most part, so Greer and Mollie won't have to wait too long.

I know several of you have asked about the last Heart's desire book. Daniel and Kerry will get their story when I'm done Greer and Mollie's. The fourth Beckett brother's tentative book title is Wolf's Bane, but that might get changed if Samhain has a similar title.

Anyway, that's it for this week. We're hoping to take the kids to see Despicable Me 2 tomorrow, so if one of my characters develops a sudden love of bananas, you'll understand why.

Just A Quickie

I came home from the RT Convention yesterday and woke up this morning with a fever.

Blargh.

So. Just a couple of quick announcements before I go back to hugging my orange juice bottle and moaning piteously:
